Planning, Design & Construction (PD&C) stewards the physical development of the UCR campus in support of its teaching, research, and public service mission.

PD&C’s work is guided by a strong commitment to sustainability and the acknowledgement of its truly diverse, inclusive, and globally-focused community. Through long range planning, new construction, and creative renovation of existing campus buildings, open space, and infrastructure, PDC seeks to preserve and enhance UCR’s distinct sense of place.

The work of Planning, Design & Construction is divided between the responsibilities for the planning and design of the campus, and the management of construction.

Student Health and Counseling Center front shot
New center promotes holistic approach to wellness
UC Riverside is taking its approach to health and wellness to a new level with the opening of the Student Health and Counseling Center later this month. The 39,450-square-foot, two-story building at the north side of campus brings together medical, mental health, and wellbeing services into one location and modern facility for the first time. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held Sept. 22 to mark the completion of construction, which began in Feb. 2022.

New path improves northside access, soccer field
A new walkway under construction at UC Riverside will provide easier access at the northwest corner of campus, including to and from a major new student housing project. The South Recreation Mall project began construction in spring and is expected to be completed by fall, said Daneca Stevens, a project manager with the Office of Planning, Design, and Construction. The new concrete path will run alongside the UCR Soccer Field, which will see improvements as a result, and link to an existing path to the north next to the UCR Track Facility.

Native American Garden grows at the center of campus
Trees and plants are sprouting in the center of the UC Riverside campus as the new Native American Garden nears completion. A landscape contractor began planting trees, bushes, and other vegetation this spring in a 20,000-square-foot area in the upper mall outside the Highlander Union Building, or HUB, next to Pierce Hall.

School of Medicine construction
UCR to see another construction boom
UC Riverside will see a major increase in construction activity in the coming months with several significant projects nearing completion or beginning soon. Those include a new School of Business building, which held its groundbreaking on April 27, and completion of a new School of Medicine building that will open this fall. Preliminary plans are also underway for a large instructional building and the next phase of student housing at the North District.

Regents approve plans for new School of Business building
The Regents of the University of California have approved construction plans for a new UC Riverside School of Business building that will provide more instructional and administrative space to meet growing enrollment demand. The vote, which took place July 20, allows the campus to move forward with construction this fall. The new building is expected to be completed by fall 2024.

UCR begins construction of new Student Health and Counseling Center
UC Riverside will begin construction this week on a Student Health and Counseling Center that will bring together health and wellness services at an accessible, modern facility. A groundbreaking ceremony will be held Friday, Feb. 18 for the planned two-story building located on the western portion of Parking Lot 21, south of Linden Street, between Aberdeen Drive and Pentland Way. Construction is anticipated to take over a year with the center opening to students by May 2023.
