Future use of Bannockburn explored
UC Riverside is beginning to explore possible future uses of Bannockburn Village as it gets ready to close the aging student housing complex at the end of this month. Housing Services convened focus groups last month to hear campus partners’ suggestions on the future development of the site. As a follow-up to seek broader input, it has created an online survey for campus community members to share their thoughts.

One of UCR’s oldest buildings spruced up
A more than 100-year-old cottage that is one of the last remaining original buildings at UC Riverside has gotten a new lease on life. An extensive renovation project was recently completed to the University Cottage, a small building that is one of the oldest on campus. It was one of a small cluster of buildings that were part of the Citrus Experiment Station that predates UCR. It was first built in 1917 as one of three small residential cottages across from the original Barn structures that included a horse stable, carpenter shop, hay barn, and two wagon sheds.

Dedicated bike lane installed inside campus
UC Riverside is testing out a dedicated pathway for bicycles, scooters, and skateboards in front of the Arts Building. The new bike lane was installed in February and is part of a pilot program that will run through the end of the spring quarter. Although the campus has bike lanes on its roads, the new pathway is the first in an internal corridor.

North campus sidewalk reopens
A widely used campus walkway has reopened to pedestrians as UC Riverside’s new instructional building project draws closer to completion. The sidewalk at the north side of campus, running along the Amy Harrison Athletic Field and UCR Soccer Stadium, had been closed since mid-December as part of construction for the Undergraduate Teaching and Learning Facility, or UTLF.

Oak tree art display honors Native American history
A new art display at UC Riverside’s Student Success Center pays tribute to the region’s Indigenous tribes and the trees sacred to them with a wood carving made from oak trees that once stood at the site. A celebration and unveiling for the oak tree art display, which was installed in July, will be held Sept. 23. The installation, mounted on a wall on the building’s first floor, combines several wood pieces to create a 20-foot-wide and 10-foot-long display.

New UCR student housing complex to open
UC Riverside will open its newest student residential community this week, continuing efforts to meet housing demands with a first-of-its-kind partnership. Close to 250 students from Riverside Community College District, or RCCD, will be the first to move into North District 2 on Aug. 23, in advance of their fall semester starting the following week. UCR students will move in Sept. 19 and 20, the weekend before UCR’s fall quarter starts.

New student housing complex readies for opening
Construction crews are putting the finishing touches on UC Riverside’s new student housing complex project in advance of its opening next month. Major construction of North District Phase 2 is mostly complete with work expected to be wrapped up soon, said John Franklin, a project manager with the Office of Planning, Design, and Construction. The first group of students will move in later that month in advance of Riverside Community College District’s fall semester, which begins Aug. 25.
